Shoulder Instability and Dislocations

Shoulder instability occurs when the glenohumeral joint loses its ability to stay centred, causing a feeling of "slipping out" or complete dislocation. It can be traumatic or due to joint hyperlaxity.

⚠ Most common symptoms

  • Acute pain and inability to move the arm
  • Feeling that the shoulder "slips out"
  • Insecurity when raising the arm overhead

🩹 Treatment

  • First episode: closed reduction, brief immobilisation, physiotherapy
  • Recurrent instability: arthroscopic surgery (Bankart, Latarjet)

✅ Prognosis

  • Very good with surgery in active patients.
